A tumor of the brain or spinal cord is a disease in which abnormal tissue forms in the tissues of the brain or spinal cord. The brain controls many important body functions. The spinal cord connects the brain with nerves in most parts of the body. Tumors of the brain and spinal cord are a common type of childhood cancer.

There are different types of tumors of the brain and spinal cord in children.

- embryonal tumors of central nervous system
- germ cell tumors of the central nervous system
- primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the central nervous system

- pineal region tumors

Do not know the cause of most brain tumors and spinal cord in children. Symptoms of brain tumors and spinal cord are not the same in all children. To detect (find) and diagnose tumors of the brain and spinal cord Child tests are used to examine the brain and spinal cord.

Most brain tumors in children are diagnosed and removed by surgery. Some tumors of the brain and spinal cord, children are diagnosed by imaging tests. Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery).

There are many types of tumors of the brain and spinal cord in children. The tumors are formed by the abnormal growth of cells and can begin in different areas of the brain or spinal cord. Together, the brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system (CNS).

Tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancer). Benign brain tumors grow and press on nearby areas of the brain. Rarely spread to other tissues. Malignant brain tumors are more likely to grow quickly and spread to other brain tissues. When a tumor grows to a brain area or the press, you can keep that part of the brain to function properly. Both benign and malignant brain can cause symptoms and need treatment.
